Where Help is Really Needed

The need in Honduras is overwhelming.  In an attempt to make whatever difference we can, Friends of Los Niños has chosen to provide support for a children's home just outside of El Progreso called Copprome.  Founded in 1982 by Sister of Notre Dame Teresita Gonzalez,Sister Teresita a wonderful woman that has dedicated her life to the daily care of children in Honduras, Copprome provides direct support to as many as 75 children between the ages of 3 and 20.  Calling Copprome home, the children are either orphaned or their parents are not capable of providing even a basic standard of living.  The local court system, acting on behalf of the children, place them at Copprome until the time they are 18 or their families are able to provide for them.

Education in Honduras is for the privileged few.  Luckily, the children at Copprome get an education from a wide variety of sources.  All children attend an age appropriate school and are required to spend time doing their "homework".  Help on assignments is provided by a multitude of young volunteers from around the world.  It is a wonderful experience to witness the eagerness of the children learning as well as the volunteers teaching.

Copprome is an established children's home; it has and will continue to provide for children for years to come.  All supporters, including the board members and directors and staff of Copprome, have the children's best interests at heart and it is evident in the loving environment that is seen and felt.

While Copprome is not as new perhaps as other children's homes in El Progreso, it provides a comfortable and safe environment for its residents.  From the dining room, computer lab to the large open area around the propery, Copprome is functional and practical.  Educational level approriate class rooms are on property so students can learn or study and sleeping quarters are roomy allowing some space and privacy to the children.

The staff at Copprome are very thankful to receive the funds donated.  Below is a portion of Sister Tere's letter of gratitude and well wishes for Christmas 2008..............

Dear Friends,

We are remembering you in a special way.

In these days we are getting ready at Copprome for a little Christmas party with tamales and piñata. Things that children like.

I want to thank you for everything you have done for us. I feel like the little drummer boy, with nothing to offer you, accept the joy that you have given our children, and the poor. Your unconditional love and kindness, and trust in me, has given these children and other needy people better opportunities in their lives. You have given them an opportunity to improve their lives and to see the world from a different angle.

This year we had 12 graduated. These youth have come from different places like mountains, villages and 4 from COPPROME.

Many blessings in 2009. My prayers will be with you at Christmas midnight mass.

Sister Tere
